The perils of "should"
Forgive me for waxing Byron Katie-esque, but I have been thinking a lot about "should." I've come to the conclusion that "should" is the enemy of happiness. I am not saying that seeking to progress or improve is bad. But the moment we start thinking that we, other people, or our situations are not what they "should" be, we start ourselves into a spiral of negative thoughts and feelings and undermine our own happiness, gratitude and feelings of worthiness. I think, at least for me, the answer is to replace "should" with "choose," "do not choose" and "it is." I'm sure it's easier said than done, but I choose to start looking at myself, others, and life differently, and to be grateful for what is. What do you choose?
